A good home remedy for this is to mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of insecticidal soap in one gallon of water. Shake well, pour into a sprayer, and spray your plants. This will have to be done weekly or again after it rains. Another good home remedy is half milk half water, just spray on the plants like the baking soda mixture. Bayer 3 in One is a good product to use as well. It has fertilizer, fungus control, and insect control. The Bayer is mixed with water and watered in at the base of the plant so no spraying is involved. It can also be used in conjunction with the above methods for extra control since nothing is 100%. Make sure to remove what you can of the debris under the shrub because that can continue to infect the plant. Water in the morning. If your roses are wet during the night, that also aids in the black spot production and spread. And the insects are the #1 spreader of black spot on the plant. When they munch on one area, then move to another area, they spread the disease, so insect control is important as well. Now that the season is almost over, don't worry, they will spring back next year and you will have a fresh start. Best of Luck!!!

Sounds like a classic case of black spot. It's a fungal disease that is easily controlled but you have to spray the plant at regular intervals--usually every 7-10 days. It's a lot of work but roses are labor-intensive plants. If you want nice ones you have to work at it.

There are several to chose from. Ortho Funginex (now called Disease Control) has been around for decades. Others to chose from include daconil or fungonil depending on the manufacturer.

Some earth-friendly ones are sulfur spray and Remedy made by Bonide.

Sometimes leaf curl can be caused by aphids, spider mites or thrips. You can use Ortho Orthenex which has a disease control and insect control so you only have to spray one time for both problems (if both exist). But again you have to do it on a regular schedule of 7-10 days.

Basically your dog is fertilizing your grass to death, due to nitrogen in the urine. If too much nitrogen is applied to a lawn it causes it to burn, just as if you were to over fertilize it. That is why the grass around the edges is very long and darker than the yellow spot. Large breed as well as unaltered female dogs tend to cause more of this. Milano is a fixed female and she hasn't left any brown spots in 8+ years.
