He dealt a knock-out blow to the Ptolemaic geocentric model of the universe on the evening of 10th January 1610 when he demonstrated that Jupiter had 4 moons which revolved around it, clearly demonstrating that the Ptolemaic idea that everything revolved around the earth was not consistent with the facts.
In doing so he ushered in the scientific revolution in which theories had to be proven and dogma could no longer be accepted as undisputed fact. And thereby loosened the grip of religion on people's thinking.

I'm tempted to answer this very sarcastically, but:
1) Galileo invented the telescope, from which the microscope was derived, enabling people to identify harmful bacteria, and begin to find cures to diseases that have plagued mankind for eons.
2) Galileo was one of many brave men who proved that truth is not a matter of the dictates of tyrants.
I am quite sure that he did more, but those are the feats that came instantly to mind.

Galileo did NOT invent the telescope. That was a chance invention by a contemporary in Holland: Hans Lippershey, who was an eyeglass maker.
However, Galileo was the first to use a telescope to observe the sky.

I think Galileo contributed to the store of knowledgeable truth in the evolution of science.
His so called "society" certainly was not ready for his contributions, our "society" readily accepts his postulates as a mater of fact.

Yes, the mere fact that he challenged the Catholic Church and told them that they might be wrong freed the common man to be able to think for himself and not to fear of the Catholic Church and to not ever trust Know-it-all religious leaders. This was and still is good for people and society. Listening to religious fanatics, which Galileo hated, will make you ignorant, or worse if you are a Muslim, make you into a crazy, evil violent Terrorist.

Yes, he turned the religion of the day on it's head, and showed them the Earth is not the center of anything, that the moon is not perfect like they thought, and a thousand other things.
If it were not for his enlightenment among others, you would probably not have a computer yet to ask such a question on.

Of course! He invented a telescope, different to the Newton's telescope. He was the first who noticed that the Earth was moving. And he was the first who saw satelites in other planets (Jupiter's satelites!)
