the cushion covers / apron are good ideas to start with.
When i started teaching my daughter to sew ( she was only 8 at the time) I marked lines on paper & had her stitch over them to get the feel of the machine.
other easy things to start with are elastic waist skirts / shorts & wrap skirts.
Most pattern books have " Easy Sew" sections.- sometimes it is easier just to follow the diagrams than read the instructions
I am in Australia & most sewing machine retailers here offer classes with the purchase of a machine - were these offered to you?
Also some of the big fabric stores here offer classes- you could check them out.
GOOD LUCK - your imagination will be your only limit as to what you can do in time
just take it steady- also start with inexpensive fabrics as you will not be too concerned IF you make mistakes

Make some new curtains. This is possibly one of the easiest projects for a beginner because it is all straight line sewing and no pattern is needed. Just measure the window you want to cover and add about 6" to the length ( 3" for hem and 3" for the rod pocket at the top ) and cut 2 panels each one the same width as the window so when it is shirred onto the rod it will have some drape and fullness.

Get used to the machine and what it can do before starting a big project.

Make Cushion Covers first as they are very easy. Once you.ve mastered that you'll be able to sew anything.

This is a wonderful site for beginners..great projects and they can help you if you run into trouble with your sewing machine...
Don't start sewing without holding on to your two threads behind the needle and start slow......that is important...otherwise you will jam your machine...most beginners forget this...

at walmart or other stores like joannes have printed panels of different themes. the print will tell you the things you might need to finish the project. usually it isn't much, mostly stuffing and like. I did dolls, and animals, and christmas scenes and books to make. or make a log cabin quilt, all it consists of is sewing strips of material together, get a book from library., to get directions.

Pillows are somewhat basic. To spruce it up you're able to desire to even decrease your preliminary out of a cordinating fabric and zig zag it on the middle of the front of the pillow formerly you actual stitch the facets jointly. you could hand draw the preliminary or print one out and use it as a development. sturdy success!
