Experiment with cheap fabric first (or use an old sheet) just to get the hang of cutting out the pattern and then finding the right one that fits best. Companies make different patterns and some fit better than others. The trick is finding the one that fits best. It takes time to learn how to sew. So start with the "easy" ones first. Don't start with Vogue or McCalls or Butterick as they tend to be more for the expert sewers! Sometimes you have to learn just by doing. Just ask my pile of throw aways because of mistakes!! And whatever you do, follow the directions. Not to be smart, but that really helps when you are new at it.

Go to a fabric store (Jo Ann's Fabrics is one) and find out if they have classes. If you don't have a friend of family member that can teach you, that is the best way. Also, you might be able to find classes at your local community college as well.

start with small things to get practice that way you dont get frustrated, cause when you get frustrated you rush. try practicing on pillows and blankets. then you learn. definitely read the instructions on the pattern
