Virtual Memory (or VM) is not really memory. It is using a portion of your hard drive to store programs that you have opened, but not currently using. VM is used mainly when you don't have a lot of RAM in your PC, and it fills quickly if you are running several programs and applications at the same time.

VM also handles a lot of the file swapper functions.

VM will self adjust itself, and will do this each time you reboot your computer. You can also set your VM to a higher mb so it doesn't run out of room as quickly.

To readjust the VM, click your Windows Key + Pause/Break. When the System Properties box comes up, go to Advance tab. From the advanced tab click the Performance Settings button. When the Performance Option screen pops up, choose the Advance Tab and click the Change button in Virtual Memory. Remember, don't put a number higher than 1/3 of the available space currently left on your Hard Drive, else you will not have space for anything else.

Example: if you have an 80 GB HDD, and have only 20 GB left, you only want to give up to 6 GB to VM (which hopefully is not really necessary unless you have less than 512 MB RAM using Windows XP).

I've included a website to explain VM in better detail.

Virtual memory is how the computer fixes the problem of not having enough RAM. It uses a part of the hardrive which is much slower then RAM. It is a spot on the hardrive (HD) where the computer can load vital system files for a program to run. To fix the slow problem go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Once there delete all the programs that you do not use. Also then go to Start > My Computer > Right click on your C: drive > then go to tools > then click on defragment once there click on analyze and then once that is done defragment. I hope this was some help.

If this was not talk to a computer professional at you nearest computer store.

Unless you have changed your default virtual memory settings in the system properties, then chances are you are being hit by some type of malware. I suspect a virus is causing your problem. But it could also be caused by spyware. Also if your computer has been running non-stop and you have an old version of windows such as Win 95, 98, or OMG Windows ME, then you could simply need to reboot and possibly get rid of some of your programs running in your task bar.

I would first try getting your computer virus scanned by one of the free services on the internet. If your computer comes up clean, then you need to look into the other possibilities, such as a bad memory stick, or an old version of windows. You may also check to make sure windows is managing your virtual memory.

Virtual memory is the amount of RAM, or random access memory, on your computer. When you're running many programs at once, you're using a lot of your system's RAM and depending on the amount of RAM you have, you could cause your computer to slow down tremendously.

My recommendation is either to get more RAM for your computer, or just start opening fewer programs on your system. I know if you're running programs such as iTunes, messenger programs, or playing back high-quality video, you can really eat up a lot of memory.

Sounds like you're running low on RAM. Try stopping some running processes down in your system tray. To really fix this issue, you may want to buy more memory.

A defrag might help. Make sure you run a disc clean up first, then defrag. If you have never done it, it might take awhile, so run it at night or when you're not using ur pc. Good luck.

it means that you do not have enough RAM on your system, take your comuter to a repair shop and ask them to put another stick of ram in, i wouldnt do it yourself because RAM is sensitive and no offense you dont seem very educated in the feild
