I think because Mary Ann was the girl next door and had a clean wholesome image. The kind of girl you would take home to mom.

Mary Ann was approachable... she wasn't stuck on herself at all. Ginger knew she was glamorous, but Mary Ann saw herself as a small town girl. If you look carefully at each character, Mary Ann simply seemed to be a better person. If you look only at their physical characteristics (forget the fancy movie star gowns of Ginger and forget those little shorts and shirts on Mary Ann), both have attractive bodies and are in good physical condition. If you look at their faces, I still say Mary Ann has more beauty... and perhaps that's because her inner beauty really shined through!

I think it's the same as that most normal men with morals would like a girl next door for long-term relationships. I mean Ginger is hot but she seems like the party type and probably more high maintenance than Mary-Ann. I personally like girls who are down to earth and with good morals and values for a long-term. I wouldn't mind partying with girls with tatoos, smokers and even bi-sexual bullcrap but when it comes down to actually wanting a girl for marriage, I want a nice girl who doesn't do all those things I mentioned above.

Guys like Mary Ann more because she was the virgin type girl. Ginger was more glamourous, but she was also the "broken in" one.

Ginger acted self important and glamorous. She wore tons of makeup :). She worked to maintain an aloof and somewhat clueless demeanor.
On the other hand, Mary Ann was beautiful, inside and out, smart, accessible and real. It stuns me to think that anyone would have preferred to be with Ginger.

Ginger is more nearly a drag queen.
Mary Ann is accessible and relatable.

Ginger desperately wanted to be beautiful and had to act beautiful in order to be beautiful. Her means of attaining beauty were artificial. People can generally see through superficiality. It is a huge turn-off.
On the other hand, Mary Ann didn't have to try to be beautiful. She was naturally beautiful, from her smile to her soul. We cannot fake who we are, because who we are is who we are.
