It can be done. But you need to know what you are doing. If you don't know what needs doing, it can pretty much trash your system.
Two questions
1) Why are you downgrading from Windows Pro to Windows Home?
2) Is there another problem which is why you are doing this?
If you just want to reinstall over the top of your existing windows system, you can do that quite easily.
Put in your new windows XP Home setup disc and restart your PC. It should boot up from the CD and start the installation process. When it gets to the point where it asks you where you want to install Windows, point it at your existing windows partition. Answer yes to all the 'are you sure' questions and it will go and do it.
Good luck.

As I understand your question, you have XP professional on your machine, but do not know the password to your account, and you want to install XP home.
If you put the XP home CD in your CD drive, configure your bios to boot from the CD, you should then be able to instal XP home.

Sure, there are a few. I linked below to a great utility called ntpasswd. Burn it on a cd, start the system on the cd and follow the steps to change the administrator password. Past experience with this leads me to suggest merely blanking the password, and setting it when you actually restart XP. Detailed instructions for using this are included on the site below. This works fine for XP and older OSes, I've had crappy luck with server 2003.

Have you tried pressing return? That sometimes works, although I don't k now why it's asking you for a password unless it's networked to another machine(s)? Probably the simplest thing to do is simply reformat your drive and install home edition on it, having saved any folders/files you want to keep to a second drive if you have one or, alternatively, to a CD or DVD.
Good luck and hope you get it sorted soon.

if you have the original windows xp home edition cd, then you should be able to put it on that computer w/o any password from the original operating system. just put in your original home ed disc, boot from it, format the drive, and install it.

If you can get into the register, look in there for the problem that causing you to receive the password message. Delete it in there most times problems are solved in the register.
Be careful what you remove and back up first, myself I never do.

See the link below (note you need to be a bit texh savvy)
If the computer has XP Pro then that's the one to us, its a backwards step to use Xp home.

Well you cant downgrade Windows so your going to have to make a clean install. The password wont be needed as you will be completing a clean install.
