#42 for the St. Louis Cardinals was retired today (about 4 hours ago). Bruce Sutter wore the number from 1976-1988.

Jackie Robinson wore that number but didn't play for the Cardinals, he played for the Dodgers. Major League Baseball retired that number from all of the League a few years ago.

only actice play wearing #42 is mariano rivera and once he retires it will never be worn again because it was retired by the mlb so Jackie Robinson but any current player at the time wearing 42 could wear it until the end of their career. Right now Rivera is the last one.
