boil the kettle a few times with the citric acid and water. once you think you've cleaned the kettle enough boil the kettle again, each time with clean water just to make sure you've rinsed it enough. this is how we cleaned kettles with D-scaler when i worked in kitchen, hope this helps

I always use baking soda, similar thing I guess in that it will have the same effect as citric acid. You need to put about half a teaspoon in the kettle of cold water, bring it the boil and switch off. Leave to stand for about five minutes (or longer depending on the amount of scale in the kettle) and then empty. Fill the kettle with plain water and bring to the boil again - this should be repeated a couple of times to remove any residue/taste. Good luck.

There are plenty of products on the market to de-scale kettles which use hydrochloric acid. If you want to use a natural product, use vinegar, it'll work better than citric acid. Use it 50/50 with water, heating the water helps it work better, but don't let the water boil over. Rinse the kettle thoroughly afterwards and boil through at least once.
