The eagle was believed to be the first messenger of the great spirit by some Indian cultures, and was called the "sun eagle," "mountain eagle," or "thunderbird."
In most Plains Indian cultures, an act of bravery was rewarded with the right to wear an eagle feather, called a "coup" feather. Coup was a French word used by trappers, meaning to "touch or to strike." To understand the plains warrior, one must understand the motivation for counting and keeping track of brave deeds. A physical representation of a deed was important as a sign to all that a man was brave and had put himself in physical danger for the good of his people.

In some Indian cultures a man could not marry until he had counted coup or turned 25, which insured that the fastest, strongest men married first and had children to strengthen the nation. In addition, men who proved themselves as protectors and warriors received prestige and power within the tribal council. Counting coup was important because killing an enemy without touching him was honorless. To merely kill the enemy and ride off was considered to be a worthless act.

He'd killed three people in battle was what I was told, but I don't know if that is historically correct. I'm of the cowboy movie generation and they were not known for their factual content.

It probably meant different things depending on what tribe you're referring to, as well as what type of feather. You might want to be more specific.
