The torque converter changes mechanical energy into hydraulic energy to drive your transmission. It is located between the engine and transmission.Yes it can cause the problems you describe.

Torque converter is not likely the problem. It is the component that "converts" the engine torque to usable power for the transmission. It is located behind and bolted to the flywheel of the engine.
If you have lost power, most likely you have a problem with engine management controls.
I don't know what your mechanical ability is, but I would go to the PCM and draw the codes, identify them and the respective circuits and systems, and then proceed with appropriate diagnostics/repairs.

For a little bit of a "heads up", go here------->

NOTE-----> The codes identify a circuit or system, NOT necessarily the failed component. Follow the diagnostics to eliminate false leads.

Good Luck
