To oversimplify, if space were smaller there would be to many collisions between objects to give life a chance to evolve, and you wouldn't be here to ask this question.
A better question might be: 'Why are the forces of nature 'just right' to make the universe possible in the first place?'

Space is one big infinity symbol. 8 it curves back on itself and the end becomes the beginning.
If you look at the structure of an atom...remarkably like that of the solar system. If you think of it like this every atom is a solar system in itself. And every solar system is an atom of something bigger.
