Do I just use elbow grease or is there a tool I have to buy to remove it? The replacement I bought is not grooved for screwing, and it seems to me that if I just muscle the old one, it should finally break loose. But I figured I should check here before I make more problems.

Usually you just unscrew it but if its too corroded it might break then youll have more problems on your hands than you started with it also sounds like you bought the wrong pop up it should be grooved.

Large popup rotating sprinklers require a special wrench that fits under the sprinkler inside the case.

A popup tube type of sprinkler should just unscrew from the riser.

These unscrew at the base, But if it has been installed on galvanized pipe or has been there for a long time it is a chore. it is best if you dig around it and hold the supply line with a pipe wrench while you turn the old sprinkler at the base with another pipe wrench. if you install the new one with a touch of anti sieze compound it will prevent this.

If you have new one with no threads to screw it on the pipe, you have a problem. Normally they screw on and off. If yours are glued on, you will have to cut the old one off and then glue the new one on. I've never seen a sprinkler head that glues on. Most all screw on and off.
