The average age that a kid stops is around 12-13 years of age or whenever they hit 7th-8th grade. Once they hit high school, many (but not all) push the trick-or-treating part off to the side. There are many kids though that have younger brothers or sisters and go trick-or-treating while they are escorting them. (I was trick-or-treating up through high school for this reason.)

There really isn't a specific age out there you can say that someone 'should' stop trick-or-treating. In the past it used to be gradeschool, but today's culture is different than it was 50 years ago. The only hardcore exception that comes to mind: If you are an adult and your costumed presence scares the houseowners for their safety and their valuables, then take the hint and stick to the adult halloween parties.

This is a good question. I'll tell you my story.

Normally, I'd say a person should stop trick-or-treating at around 12. I lost my taste for it around this time, and at 12 going on 13, in eighth grade, I threw a party the Saturday before Halloween, rather than trick-or-treat.

However, when I went away to college, I found some students liked to go trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. So in my sophomore year, 18 going on 19, I let a friend persuade me into going trick-or-treating. She dressed as a track star, and I as a farmwoman a la Little House on the Prairie or Fiddler on the Roof. It was fun!

Now things are changed and rarely do kids come to the house; they trick-or-treat at the stores on our "Main Street". I dress in costume, I give out little treat bags to the kids on the street, and I do a little trick-or-treating at the stores, too, and I'm almost 50!

So, if you're a teenager or adult, wear a costume and limit your trick-or-treating to the stores. (And take only a little candy, please!; don't be greedy!) Or, take some littler kids trick-or-treating to the houses!

(I don't recommend that people over 13 go from doorbell to doorbell; that's too frightening, even for Halloween!)

I'd say you should stop when you finish school and start college. You're becoming a young adult so not trick r treating by that point is a guy way to grow up more.

IMO, when the thought of free candy doesnt sound like the coolest thing on the world. I went when i was 16, before i had a job, sure some people said "arent you a bit old to be trick or treating?" but who cares, its free candy!

12 years of age, or after leaving the 6th grade which ever comes first.

Once a kid becomes a pre teen and enters into Junior High they should start acting like they are growing and maturing. One of the first steps to that is, passing out the candy vs trick or treating. Most schools will give parties or dances the kids can attend which is another sign to say you should be doing other activies.

We hate it, but we all have to grow up some time.
