Transmission fluid is red out of the bottle, but because or residue left in the transmission, when the fluid is added, it will have a brown caste to it. If your transmission fluid is bubbly on the dipstick, there is water in the transmission fluid. If your transmission fluid is black, then it is probably time to have the transmission fluid replaced (1991 is definitely in that category if it has over 100,000 miles). Most places charge about $50-$80 to do the fluid change, but more to do more work than that. If your van will not go into gear at all, it is probably more than just the transmission fluid being dark. Used transmissions and rebuilt transmissions run different rates, go to a place that guarantees or warranties their work. A rebuilt transmission will also have a limited warranty. You have to ask around for the prices and amount of time it will take if you have to have your transmission replaced. You're probably looking into sinking at least $1500 in a transmission.

Transmission fluid should be red!!

Depending on the engine, the transmission replacement will run $1500 to $2800. With a van that old, unless it is in spectacular shape, it is cheaper to get a newer vehicle than replace the transmission!!!

Sort of pinkish. Once it turns dark brown or black, it is time for an oil change and be sure to change the oil filter as well.

I just replaced the engine on my 1997 Buick Century, and it cost me $1300. The mechanic was fortunate enough to find a rebuilt engine that only cast $500, so I got a good deal. It has been three months now, and the car is running well. Good luck with yours!!

Chow!!

The fluid should be red in colour. The cost to replace a transmission varies greatly depending on where the job is done, and with what parts used (rebulit or used salvage yard pieces).

the fluid should be a reddish color. unless it is synthetic fluid then it will be a clear fluid. now for the transmission question. if you go to a dealership it will cost about 2000.00-2500.00 but there are some reliable transmission shops around that will do the job anywhere from 1000.00-1500.00 i hope this helps you

Pink. If brown, change the fluid and filter.

$1000 to $1500 should replace or rebuild that.

wide-spread transmission fluid in sturdy structure might want to be a translucent pink in colour. If it receives to be opaque, or worse, it needs to get replaced. also, the scent can allow you to recognize something too. If it smells burnt, it really is and may get replaced.

The same color it comes out of the bottle. If it is brown in color your clutches are burning up,if it is light pink there could be water in it.

If it is a new car then the transmittion fluid should be a purple or pink color. But if it is used then it should be black.
