For your needs I would look at the Japanese cars. They are reliable and hold their value. Honda and Toyota are class leaders. The Toyota Avensis estate would be ideal for a family especially with one that needs room for a buggy. Avoid the Renaults, they do not have a good reputation for reliability.

Any Volvo Sedan, regardless of the age, has very high safety ratings. Also, you may want to check into Audi, they have even in the older versions high safety ratings. You should be able to find an older one of either brand for a decent price, and if you're looking into a new car, even then Volvo and Audi are at the top of my list for family cars.

most modern renaults pass with 4 stars for saftey, laguna megane, scenic and espace not sure the clio would suit your needs. most car sales garages would happily let you try your buggy in the boot for trial fiiting before you make your choice.

Honda always come top in the surveys for safety, reliability, and for holding their price. I own a Mitsubushi.
