I always say excuse me after a belch.
Farts are a whole different thing, and a simple "excuse me" usually doesn't provide adequate relief for the victims.
I think it was George Carlin that suggested yelling "look out" before passing gas may be the proper thing to do.

It is not polite to say "better in than out" when you belch or pass gas. The polite saying is "excuse me".

Well if someone passes gas or belches . I really dont think anything you could say that would be rude. I mean they just farted or burped what could you say that would be rude ..

I wouldn't consider it polite, but if you're saying it to someone else when they did it, and they're your friend, I would consider it humorous. But only if we were friends and in a private area. For instance, I don't think it would be appropriate AT ALL if someone did that during a board meeting or something.

If you say it yourself and you did it, then it would be the same circumstances. Only with friends. Not in public.

nope it's not polite. phisycally, it is better out than in, but socially it's impolite to belch or pass gas at all.

Well, the polite thing to do is simply say "excuse me" when you are the one doing it.
Why are YOU worried about being polite when someone farts or burps in your presence?? Farting and burping should be kept private, or at least...in the family...

why not just keep your mourth closed and ignore it. it might end up embarrassing the person more if you draw attention to it. I'd say just pretend like you didn't hear it or are indifferent to it rather than making a comment like that. or if they say excuse me you could just say not a problem and then more on with the conversation.

If it were a random person I would not say anything at all. With family/friends, I would say that. I fart and burp all the time. It's natural. I still say "excuse me".

My daughter recently taught me that there was North gas and South gas. You can imagine which one is more offensive.
