I heard this name in both France and England. I think it may be of Britton origin. I saw it spelled Emery as well. Start focusing your research in the Finistère, Pas-de-Calais, Loire Maritime and Calvados areas of France. If your grand-father moved to Canada, it should be easy to retrace the family history as records have been extremely well kept in this country. You should get records of birth, marriage and death certificates, starting by yours, your parents, their parents, etc.. They usually show a lot of information and you can trace back the family history that way. If you grand-father got married in Canada, perhaps his marriage certificate would show his place of birth, name of parents, etc. Once you find his birth place, it should be a breeze to find out more about your family history in the old country.
