Inside my air cleaning housing, after removing the air filter, there was found to be an accumulation of oil, which looks to have sprayed from somewhere inside the housing. Does anyone have any idea what may have caused this, or how I can begin to detect the source? Thank you SO MUCH!!!

ETA: Went through all the checks of the PCV valve and hose, and it is in good shape. The next suggestion made to me is that I may have a cracked head. I feel my next step will be to use the high-mileage oil, in addition to a suggested addative, and if that doesn't help, I will....be stressed. Thanks so much for all help offered so far!

There is a hose that leads from the engine valve cover to the air cleaner canister. It is usually connected to a Little baffle or strainer inside the canister. When there is an accumulation of oil, there are only a couple if reasons for it.
1) The P.C.V. valve is in need of replacement (usually in the opposite valve cover or in the crankcase cover below the intake manifold.
2) Engine has high miles, and has excessive blow-by, a result of engine wear due to lack of maintenance or caused by abuse.
Start with replacing both the P.C.V. valve and its breather.
If your little car has high miles (> 100K) move to a high-mileage engine oil, preferably a good QUALITY brand, eg. Valvoline, Castrol, NAPA etc.

Good Luck
