No i haven't been drinking - I have noticed this strange phenomenon in the summer lately, they look like tiny mosquitoes and you barely notice them but on inspection they are hovering above each other in a near perfect column. Why is this?

Could be midges - which are small mosquitoes. They like damp areas, which explains why they'd be hovering over slightly moister areas, like foliage. And moisture and warmth would rise in a steady column, so they'd follow that.

Next time you spot them, look directly upwards too, you'll probably find you have a column of them above your head too. They like water becasue that's where they lay their eggs and people, obviously, becasue they can detect the warmth of the blood.

They're pretty clever like that actually - to find a person, they home in on the warmth and the carbon dioxide given off by the body, then swing in big zig-zags until they can pinpoint exactly where you are, then go for the veins which they can 'see'.
