I am comparing MP3 players and want to know if I can download from multiple sources and not just the Apple sponsored site.

You can also try eMusic. For about $10 a month you get up to 40 downloads each month in unprotected MP3 format, which will work on both iPods and other MP3 players. Since the files are unprotected you also get to copy them to other computers at will and you get to keep them even if you cancel your account.

Stay away from Limewire, Bearshare, Ares, Morpheus, Kazaa and other file-sharing stuff - don't steal music. Most of those services are being sued as I write this and it's only a matter of time before they start tracking down those who have been downloading copyrighted material without paying for it.

I've downloaded music from limewire and transferred it to my iTunes. Worked out great when I downloaded the stuff onto my iPod so I don't know what the first guy's saying.

You cannot add or delete songs using just the iPod, but instead have to add or delete songs on the "host" computer, and they will be added to your iPod or deleted from your iPod the next time it is synchronized.
From Apple's own iPod FAQ:

iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes:

1. Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synched to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.

2. Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to iPod when you connect it to the computer.

3. Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to iPod.

The iPod shuffle and iPod nano, with more modest capacities, uses Apple's "AutoFill" feature within iTunes which selects the correct number of songs, audiobooks, and podcasts to include as directed by the user or at random.

You can also configure your iPod to appear as a hard drive on the desktop and manually drag files of any type to the iPod. Music files copied to the iPod in this way won't play on the iPod, without first copying them to a computer and importing them into iTunes, but this is useful for backing up or transporting any type of file. Please refer to "Using Your iPod as a Hard Disk" and "Putting iPod Into Disk Mode" on the Apple Support Site for more information.

Yes, iTunes music store supports iPods only as all the songs have DRM (Digital Rights Management) not allowing music bought from ITMS to be play on any other device. There are ways to remove DRM tho ;)
