A drag race is a timed race from a standing start for 1/4 mile. Cars usually race 2 at a time (side by side). The first car to the finish line is the winner.

Drag racing is where two vehicles attempt to cover a flat, straight, & pre-measured course in the shortest time from a standing start. Official races are held on either a 1/4 or 1/8 mile track, however any predetermined distance could be used. Winners are determined by the lowest E.T. (elapsed time) from the standing start to crossing the finish line. Top speed across the finish line is also measured.

Drag races are usually held by class, where cars need to meet certain criteria for engine size, vehicle type, safety equipment, and other factors.

I listed a wikipedia link below that has some good information about the types of cars, governing bodies, etc. if you're interested in learning more.

The origin of drag racing is the race at a traffic light between 2 hot rods. hot rodding got very popular in the 1950's but it was a hazard having cars race on the streets. Nevertheless, the "race at the stoplight" was popular enough that a racing form was born.

The cars are raced against each other in various classes, including pure stock cars (which have very minimal modification from what you could go and buy at a dealer)
to very exotic race cars which have almost nothing in common with a road driven vehicle!

From a standstill the fastest of these cars goes 1/4 of a mile in less than 4 seconds, reaching speeds over 325 miles per hour.
The driver experiences acceleration greater than the space shuttle astronauts.

Drag race motors produce more than 800 horsepower, and right now are really being limited by tire traction more than power or aerodynamics.

It's a straightline race between two cars, from a standing start to see whose car or vehicle gets down the quarter-mile course first.

In pro drag races, the car with a record of driving faster gives the other slower car a slight starting advantage in the starting time.
