A few days ago I came home to find my (not even a year old yet) G4 17" Powerbook frozen. Rebooted and got stuck on the loading screen. The people at the Apple store informed me the hard drive was shot and that it can't even "read the directory".

Does anyone know of a way I can salvage my files without spending $500 on recovery fees? I've already tried the NVRAM reset and got stuck at the loading screen again. the PMU reset did nothing. Any ideas, guys?

If its under a year it will still be under warrenty...apple will replace...

As to gaining access to your data....it could be costly...did you not do any backups - using iDisk or burn some backups?

Trying to recover data yourself from a damaged drive may hinder further attempts and cause more damage to drive and or your powerbook.

Good Luck

You should have bought windows. I dont know if you can do this with apple, but get a external hard drive, install OSX on that, then boot from it. Or do the same thing with an internal drive.

You could try to use Spinrite from GRC software, its one of the best programs i have used to recover data and even fix dead faulty harddrives. Check it out for yourself, i highly recommend it. It will set you back about 80 bucks but its well worth it.
