Do you think that in contemporary pop culture today, being gay is turning into more of a fashion statement than anything else?

As a young 25-year old gay man, I think it's extremely offensive when people want to be gay when they're not, just because it's cool (ie. metrosexuals, or girls making out with other girls for no other reason than to please their bf's).

To me it's like a slap in the face for all the crap I went through growing up: being tormented by the jocks in school, shoved into lockers, being called ******* or queer, etc.

jycnxn: Your answer expressed EXACTLY what I was trying to convey in my question.

Of course, I'm happy that gays & lesbians are more accepted, but it's like many people take advantage of gay imagery/culture when they have no real appreciation for what it really is like to be gay (all the crap that comes with it).

as an educator, I too think it is offensive when young girls pretend to be gay and put on shows just to please the boys . There are young people struggling with their identity and afraid of repercussions if they chose to come out, while their classmates are making a mockery of the pain they are going through.

Its definately a fashion statement for some people. Instead of feeling slapped in the face be happy that its easier for gay kids to fit in, although I know there is still a long way to go for them because alot of kids still get harrassed in public schools. As for girls making out with girls, I think that has been going on for a long time. I know I did it to shock people when I was in high school and I am 28 years old.

And there is no denying that gay men have kick *** style.... (explaining the look thats popular)

I totally agree, even though I'm not gay. I understand that some people actually are gay, but the majority of kids at my school that call themselves gay or bi just do so because all of their friends do. It's become a big trend among the gothic set in my town, because it's just another reason for them to complain that people don't understand them. I've got absolutely no problem with gay people, but I do have a problem with the people who pretend to be, because they want sympathy.

I do agree that being gay has become a fashion statement, today. And to me it is just sick. This world has gotten to the point where it has absolutely no morals, whatsoever. I am sorry that you went through what you did when you were younger. No one should put up with that kind of abuse. Homosexuality, however, is unnatural. Perhaps those people that abused you, just did not know any other way to express that to you.

I'm sorry for everything you went though. Being a minority can occasionally suck. Anyways, I don't think being actually gay is a fashion statement, but have some "gay" qualities is. Girls making out is not really fake gay-ness, just something stupid people do when they're drunk.

Wow, I must be niave, old fashioned or worse. Are people REALLY claiming to be gay simply to make a trendy statement? Is this really happening? I can fully understand a gay playing as straight because there is a big discrmination thing out there from some less enlightened bigots, but seriously, straight pretending to be gay? What is the benefit of pretending to be in a persecuted group? I also do not understand your outrage at straight people claiming to be gay. I am a straight guy and I (as well as no one else I know) are not outraged that gays play as straight. Maybe I should feel like I was slapped in the face because gays are offensive to me by acting as straight! You, are on the other side of the street from me and my straight friends, but you have no cause for insult or outgage as I have no cause.

Get over it and grow up. No one is slapping you by pretending to be gay. Just as no one is slapping me by pretending to be straight. Or, like you, maybe I SHOULD feel offended by gays pretending to be straight. Maybe I SHOULD be as large a bigot as you are. Or is it that you feel they should get the same treatment that you did and are now jealous that they are NOT suffering as you did?

Your real problem is your attitude toward kids playing games by pretending to be gay. It isn't the kids who pretend who have a problem, they are just playing kid games, experimenting, it is YOU having a tolerance problem with them which offends ME.

yes it is. What bothers you worse the fact that you were not accepted as being gay when younger or being accepted as one of the fashionable set. sounds as though you miss being the trampled minority. Oh yeah and the old standby of how you feel brotherhood with Racial minorities kinda gets thrown out the window. Sucks to be you!

On one level, I have to agree. On another, though...look at it as a sign of society starting to come around and accept things. If people are imitating the behavior, they're letting themselves become more comfortable with it and learn a bit--and it's the unknown which scares people.
