hmmm couldn't think of your own question so you pinched one off of a teaching advert! clever or lazy depends how you look at it

There has been a long held belief that the Universe is expanding and will eventually collapse back onto itself such causing another big bang, thus creating a circular existance.

That would mean we as in the universe have been here before...

We have a linear existance, so lets look at this linearily.

However ask yourself, before the big bang, what was here? The answer. Relative to our understanding of the Universe, nothing. Absolute nothing. A void if you will. So the Universe is created from this void.

Galaxies form, solar systems, stars etc etc. Our galaxy is the milky way. The distance between our galaxy and the next galaxy is expanding rapidly. In fact the distance between stars within a galaxy is expanding.

This rate of change will continue until the distance between galaxies and even between stars is immeasurable and what is left is the void once more.

From this void the next big bang. So to answer the question. We are filling nothing, so there is nothing to fill.

The universe can expand without expanding "into" anything.

Suppose it were infinite---then it could expand and it would still be infinite. There would be no "outside".

One scientific guess is that the "Big Bang", the part of the Universe we are in, may be expanding into a much larger space that possibly has other "Big Bangs" in it. Because of inflation in the very early Big Bang, the part that is "our Big Bang" is now more than 10^50 lightyears across. The "space" it is expanding into could be space that is still "inflating" from the early inflation stage of the Big Bang, or it could be the space in which the initial quantum fluctuation of the Big Bang occurred.

Not sure. But most likely the explanation will stop at some point,if all the theory about dark energy (it causes the explanation or so they think) are correct.
The universe is cooling down as it expanse.Stars are getting smaller and heavier.Because the hydrogen atoms in the stars get compacted over time and when a star dies, alto of iron and heavier elements are created.Which eventually end up in new stars.

If the explanation stops at a point gravity will pull every thing back together.

This is a good question. I dont care how many other times its been asked. I dont have an answer, as Ive just posted a similar question myself. I cant relate to any of the technical answers here, but i thank all who have answered sensibley. And to those that have critiised or given stupid answer - you are all a pathetic mornic waste of space yourself, its tossers like you that make the world a dull place and posters like this person that show that there are at least some people around with some soul, imagination and character. The rest of you go and implode yourselves where the sun dont shine

I have no idea, this is like the absolute most confusing thing to understand!!! I dont understand how the big bang could have happened, so how can I understand where the Universe is expanding into

Well...I'll tell you!

The analogy that it's like a balloon blowing up fails here. This is a common misconception many people have.

Space itself is expanding, but it has no 'outer surface' like a balloon. It is warped back on itself in such a way that no edges or borders exist. This is very difficult for the human mind to grasp.

Well...is that good enough????

There is nothing beyond the universe. There is no space and no time beyond it.Infact space and time is valid only in the boundaries of the universe. what lies beyond those boundaries is unexplainable. In simpler words there is nothing beyond the universe. The universe is a sort of self-conscious entity that expands untill it wishes to and then contracts back to absolute nothing.and then again it starts expanding. This circle goes on and on.
If thats difficult to understand, well, what were you expecting?

It's expanding into itself to converge at one point to then create another Big Bang. Like the ocean, the universe has its ebb and flow. Like your breath, it inhales and exhales. Like your heart, it beats at a steady rhythm to pump blood to your arteries and take blood in from your veins--to give it life and pump it out through your arteries once again.
