I want the light to get through to the windows. I want it to be safe for kids and adults to walk on, and light enough for someone to push up from underneath if they need to escape.

What other options are available? Does anyone know companies that do this? I've seen 3/4 inch plastic rated at something like 100lbs/sq in. Wouldn't this be enough to hold?

I'd want to see a picture
but it doesn't sound like a good idea
especially if it has to be walked on

That depends on the size of the egress windows. The bigger the window, the thicker it should be. A 3/4 inch heavy duty plastic should be able to cover a 2' by 2' windows. As a precaution, put a metal grille below the heavy duty plastic.

They do make special covers, they are kind of bubble shaped, light gets in,water gets diverted and you can't walk on them. You also don't compromise the integrity of the egress.

I'd have to say covering your existing egress windows is a big no no. they are egress for one reason and that's in case of emergency you and your family can escape thru them. leave them as they are without modifications.

I wouldn't suggest doing that because it wont take much for the plastic to lose its integrity
