Most common answers would be: lose weight, don't smoke, don't drink alcohol, exercise. After that there are many medications. If one doesn't work, ask doctor to try another. You can find many sensible diets on the internet. WebMD, Health Central and others give medical advice.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. Diet and exercise do help, but she really should be taking her meds. Tell her to make an appointment with her doctor. Sometimes the meds can be changed or at least adjusted. High blood pressure (or hypertension) is know as the silent killer because there are rarely any symptoms. If your girlfriend is suffering from headaches her blood pressure is probably very high. Unchecked this can lead to CVA (stroke) and sometimes death.

There are numerous Chinese Prescriptions that are used for Hypertension but the patient must be evaluated for the proper one to use. If there is high cholesterol you can look into consuming 3 cups of tea made from Shan Zha of Hawthorne berry fruits. Celery, parsly are also good for HBP as they act as dieurtics. I would not try warming herbs as the other poster suggested as some can actually elevate HBP from a TCM perspective and again the method used needs to be chosen to bring balance and determined from the root of the disease through a thorough consultation.

Tell her to have her doc hook her up with a nutritionist. I tried every diet & it failed. I had HBP, & high cholesterol & weighed 222#. I went to see a nutritionist who took my labwork, asked me ?? about my lifestyle & told me what & when to eat. No calorie counting just common sense. It's been a year. All of my health problems are resolved & I weigh 179 - 43# lighter & am happy & active. BC/BS covers this now but last year they didn't. It was still the best $75.00 I ever spent & I have never been hungry.

Tell her to reduce her salt intake. Just read labels to check for high sodium in foods and don't buy them. Some soups have very high sodium. That is why Campbell soup makes a light verson of their soups. Don't use extra salt on prepared food. Try using a salt substitute.

diet will help but not immediately. she should eat more fruits and vegetable.
some not very active sport may help, e.g. golf or fast walking. it's all about moving and breathing fresh air as often as possible.
