car ran real short of gas, lost power, started running really choppy and backfiring, so I replaced the fuel filter thinking it sucked up some gunk. The fuel pump is about 2 months old, and seems to be running fine. Yes I added gas so its not low anymore. After the extra fuel, and the fuel filter its still backfiring, and running so choppy it will hardly move. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be past the filter? If I let off the fuel pedal the car dies. Thanks in advance if anyone has anymore ideas.

Sounds like you have an air problem, sounds to me like your car is running rich and then stumbling and that is why when you hit gas it stays alive because you are letting in air, most of the time with an air problem the car will die when you let of gas. check your throttle body and your iac valve, what kind of car? Fords and Nissan's always have the Iac go bad, it controls the idle and when it goes bad car chokes on air and then floods and wont run right at all, you need to get that fixed because to much flooding can destroy your cat and those are exp! Also fuel filters dont backfire the exhaust does, let me ask you this when you out on filter did you put it on in right direction of flow? if not then it will run bad and try to force fuel back into tank instead of to the rail, check your lines and filter to make sure arrow points to front towards flow.

if you will send me a message or an IM, I will be able go give you a better answer. I think you have a serious problem with either the Ignition or The valve timing. I may be able to give you a detailed answer if you will supply the following information.

What is the Make and model year of your car. How many miles has it been driven

In case your injectors are fouled, adding a flask of carburetor cleaner will help (it goes into the gas tank before you gas up to mix it well. Get it at NAPA or similar store. Walmart may also have it.

put a fuel pressure gauge at the schrader valve on the fuel rail, and tape the gauge to your windshield. attempt to drive the car and see what the gauge says.
if you have fuel pressure, and you can verify your injectors, your problem is probably in the ignition.....
