Either one is fine. Usually Cable internet is faster, until several people in your neighborhood get hooked up. Then DSL may be faster.
The way cable internet works is that several people will hook up to a node, which then goes back to the cable office or bigger nodes. So when several people in your neighborhood get online, things will start to slow down, because you are all sharing the same connection.
With DSL, you pretty much have your own line back to the telephone office. Your connection isn't as affected by several people getting online. But often, the speeds you get with DSL are slower that what you will get with cable.

Cable is generally faster but also more expensive than DSL.
The best is fiber optic but only a few areas have it. It's also very affordable and cheaper than cable for twice the bandwidth so if you have the option this would be a no brainer.
How fast/reliable a DSL connection is depends a lot on how far away from the telephone central office your phone line is. The farther you are, the weaker the signal.
Cable connection speed depends more on how many people on your block are using it at once.

Cable service providers are usually more reliable than the DSL providers, and involve less hassle of having the line with BT etc.
Also cable providers offer very competitive all in one packages for Internet, television and phone services.
Worth bearing in mind that in the UK Telewest is now owned by NTL and NTL never had particularly good customer feedback, however Telewest had outstanding feedback the majority of the time.
I am about to move to an area that doesn't have cable though, so I'm going to have to pick through the ADSL providers... joy.
