The cell membrane protects the contents of the cell. Much like your skin protects the contence of your body. It keeps the internal environment of the cell stable , allowing each individual component within the cell to do it's individual job. Without the cell wall, the individual components within the cell would explode due to natural osmosis(absorption of salt in the environment) causing the death of the cell itself.

It's the cell's wall. Without it there would be no cell, just a drop of protoplasm that would dry up and die.
