Good question. I have no idea, and I didn't start shaving mine until I was made fun of in middle school because of my hairy legs. I would like to know the answer though.

I think it was when women started wearing silk stockings in the 30's or there abouts, I mean who wants their legs to look like they have hibernating bear wrapped round them lol. Seriously though, when the American G I's came over and offered them around the English girls had forgotten what stockings looked like. My mother used to get gravy browning and mix it with water then she and her friend would paint each others legs with it and let it dry, they would then use an eye pencil to draw the stocking seams on the backs of their legs, it would look like they were wearing stockings, but they had to shave their legs first or else the browning would have stuck to the hairs LOL I asked her if she ever got stockings off a G I, she just smiled and did not answer, but I swear she had a glint in her eyes. I know my grandad always complained about his razor being blunt, he had more nicks on his face than chopped wood. So getting back to your question it may have come about through war shortages. lol.

This started in the early 1800's. The farm housewife was very rough looking and not too pretty. The women that worked in the cat houses was more pretty and shave their legs attract more clients to the houses. Latter on the farm housewife's started doing things to make them selves up to look more pretty to try to keep their husband home from the cat houses

Women started shaving their legs yesterday because women with hairy legs are ugly as ****!

Another reason is that they needed hair to knit clothes.

Marketing, I believe that shaving companies said that women should shave their legs and shave using marketable products in order to attract men. And it caught on.

That's a great question, honestly I don't know. I do know that some cultures do actually like women not to shave as the men actually find them sexier.

WOW, what a good question! However, it seems to be an American thing. European women don't do it, and men don't even care. They even think a little bit of fuzz looks natural and pretty.

Maybe American male insecurity?
