In music (or literature) a motif is a short recurring theme that is frequently repeated, developed, and evolved as a unifying element. One of the most famous examples would be the opening "bump-bump-bump-buuuuuuum" theme of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

Motif is the German word for motive. It refers to the main theme of a movie, book, play etcetera. Sometimes also referred to as Leitmotif, the main theme or what it all boils down to when you want to refer to what something (book, story, play) is all about.
