I think it means "of the child" or "the child". I have a hunch that it shortend version of a different name. It was quite common for Italian immigrants to shorten or Americanize there names when coming to the states. A common non-Italian surname is Davidson, which at one time meant son of David, just to give you an example of where I am going. Surnames generally fit into three catergories, relating to location, relating to profession, or relating to parentage. Nino could also refer to a place or reigon in Italy where your family once lived.
