This is a sad question.
I was a musicology student in Uni. and I adore classical, baroque and renaissance music (I'm not a huge fan of Romantic, but there are some good pieces...)
I think it is too intellectually challenging?
Music has stagnated and declined since (probably) the 1930's. It has gotten more and more simple until now we have only a beat and words (ie, rap). Even in the 1970's there was fantastic guitar techniques and some interesting orchestral things happening.
I think people are quite lazy now, and simply don't want to take the time to learn an instrument or to appreciate music. NOT EVERYONE, of course, but many. Also, it is hardly the fault of any individual since so few things in our culture take effort anymore - we've learned not to take the time and put forth effort - therefore lazy music and lazy music appreciation.

I do also, but I have a theory that people think who classical music is boring haven't ever really listened to it. People like the classical music that is used in commercials and movies, but don't know it's classical. There should be a classical music for dummies program.

On the whole it is perceived as being too complicated and 'out of touch' with modern society.
This is of course nonsensical - the harmonic basis for a large proportion of 'classical' music is no different to that of 'popular' music. It is often accused of having 'no beat' - any fan of rap or hip-hop might try listening to Monteverdi's 'Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda'. The 'stile concitato' elements are as rhythmic as any offering from modern day artists, and the narrative includes such aspects as murder, betrayal and finally remorse, much like a gangland shooting gone wrong, for example.
The human condition has not changed over the past 500 years, and the main problem 'classical' music faces now is a lack of education. It is more widely available now than ever before, and this is in part the problem. Music before Beethoven was, on the whole, not composed to be performed in public (except in church), and the conert going audiences throughout history have never represented the ordinary person. Classical music is inherently elitist, and unless one is prepared to sacrifice the time it takes to appreciate such art, there is no point complaining.
I do not suggest the 'ordinary person' should not be permitted to enjoy classical music, just that it is foolish to expect something never intended for the masses to be embraced by them, especially when it reflects a society of the past which does not fit easily with that of today.
Everybody can enjoy classical music, as long as they try - and regard it as a form of art, not as something that should compete with so-called 'popular' music. People don't like it because of its connotations of elitism and domination by dead, and living, white men. This is not important - just enjoy it for what it is. Put in the effort and you will be greatly rewarded.

People DO like it! Lots of people do. Just maybe not the people you know.
If you like it, enjoy it and don't worry if none of your friends do!
