I have a BT router. We both have laptops with wireless cards. He is moving next door, and wants to continue using the internet from my connection, but I don't trust him to pay half so wish to stop his use.
Is there anything I can do?

Thanks for answers so far, but how do I change the access code?
Both our wireless cards are connected via the WEP code which was provided with the router. How do I change this so that only I have access?
Thanks.

You need to encrypt your wireless broadband so that it can't be picked up by any laptops in the nearby area. If you look up the instructions you got when you bought your wireless router there should be instructions on how to do so.

This will restrict the signal and only you will be able to recieve your wireless broadband.

Provided you set the BT router up: wireless security.
If you haven't already set it up: go into the router from your comp. Set up wireless security protection (i.e. WEP or whatever the other options are). You can then choose a WEP key (which is just a password type thing: a string of letters and numbers). You will then need this 'password' to access the network, and thus the internet. You'll only need to type it into your computer once, and it'll remember it, and noone without it will be able to get in.

If you have already set up WEP, just change the WEP key and don't tell him the new one!

If he set up the router, and you don't know the admin password to get in and change the WEP settings: read the manual, reset the router, and the admin password will reset to default (which will be in the manual). You can then set up WEP security as before.

Change the security code on your wireless router and on your laptops to match. He will not be able to get in then.

If you have security (WEP or preferably WPA) set up on the router, change the keys or pass phrases. If you don't have security set up on the router, set it up.

There has got to be a way in the router set-up to limit what it puts out.
