Hm, well, it totally depends on the circumstances surrounding the reason for asking to come back home. If you're just lazy and want to suck the life out of your parents, than I'd have to say whatever age that is that you're choosing not to be accountable nor responsible for maintaining your own.
Now, if you've come home to regroup and get your mind right after divorce; loss of job; substance abuse recovery; or whatever it is that traumatically and dramatically necessitated your need to ask family for help, then I see nothing wrong with this. However, it's still your parent's home and rules will be adhered to. Money should be paid to assist in maintaining the household as well. You're too old to be a freeloader once you've reached 18 in my opinion. There are many ways you can help out around the house even when you're not making a lot of money.
There will come a time that you'll want your space again and SHOULD desire to move out. I think depending on your circumstances (kids, job market, living expenses) one can reasonably expect to move out anywhere from 6 mos to a couple of years. Do not take advantage of your parent(s) as they deserve having a life too.

Never too old. Family is family!! It is like asking should your parents ever live with you? What ever the reason for a family member to be living with you, must be necessary.
Personally I miss my children being an empty nest-er and would be overjoyed if they were back home with us. We are whole when we are together. You should know my children as they are stellar individuals, genuine, kind, loving and upright.
