You're right. Basically, you have to proof to the Interviewer that you're not going to stay. Things to do
1) On the application/visa form, try to put a minimum amount of days you're going to stay if possible. For instance, even if you're going to stay for a month or more, I'll write 1 week or 2 weeks. This does not matter cause you are going to get one year visa anyway (which is the minimum they issue).
2) Proof to them you have a reason to come back ( a job in Vietnam -take your business card), or you're still in school (take any proof that you're enrolled in a school).
3) Don't be too sure that you're staying at your friend's . Telling them you have the option of staying in a hotel will give them the impression you're not staying that long. Just tell them you havent decided where you are going to stay, but a hotel is a possiblilty.
3) Just be calm and confident and speak properly everything will be alright.

Don't give the interviewer anything until s/he ask.
I know this I have my relatives come visit me from Africa a lot, and I know how tough and nerve racking those interviews could be.

Goodluck.

Is it more complicated than to phone the embassy, ask what you should bring with you, and make an appointment if they do that, or ask when the clerk's office is open if they don't make appointments? If they are anything like bureaucrats here in the states, you'd better take a thick book to read and a bottle of water, as you are likely to be there some time. But they should certainly tell you on the phone when you make the appointment what documents you should bring. Bring the originals, but make copies.

If you contact a travel agent near you they'll be able to tell you specifics, I would imagine.
