Beleive it or not, the 1969 L88 can outrun the 2006 Z06 in a straight line. AFAIK, no one has ever tested and documented a stock 1969 ZL1 Corvette in the 1/4 mile, although Zora Duntov set up a test car for the press in Feb 1969 that ran 10.5 seconds with slicks and headers all day (Motor Trend Oct 1969).
With the advances in technology, the new one is the better car no doubt, and the one I'd rather drive, but read on for some surprising info!
There has been a lot of discussion as to the performance of a stock L88 Corvette or ZL1 Camaro. Year One sponsors a drag racing event called FAST (Factory Appearing Stock Tire) and also an F/S (Factory Stock) category. There are also the PSMCDR or Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race events.
For those who are wondering, here are the rules for the Factory Stock category involving an L88 or a ZL1:
Basic Rules Of The Factory Stock Class
Clones of limited available cars:
If you have a 68/69 427 COPO car clone.
If you have an L88 / ZL1 Corvette.
You must have an EXACT match clone.
You may run the Aluminum heads on your EXACT match clone only if they are the EXACT year, and EXACT OEM casting number for your engine & car.
In General: Clones are OK, but they must be EXACT correct.
http://forums.factorystockmusclecars...71/m/626107086
Note that is states EXACT. Not "close", "in the spirit of", etc., but EXACT. These cars are subjected to engine tear down and verification of CID, CR's, cam size, carb size, etc. In short, those that run these events are experts in the field with sophisticated test equipment, they don't play around, and cheaters are disqualified.
All cars must run the full OEM factory exhaust system including manifolds (no "trunk option" headers allowed), pipes, and mufflers. They must also run on correct (size, full tread) reproduction BIAS PLY tires as were stock on the car.
The fastest times recorded in Factory Stock are as follows:
Jim Johnston 1969 L88 427 Corvette 11.58 @ 121 F/S 11-12-05 Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ
Peter Simpson 1969 ZL1 427 Camaro 11.75 @ 117 F/S 11-12-05 Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ
http://forums.factorystockmusclecars.com (see below)
Jimmy Johnston 1969 L88 Corvette 11.71 @ 121 F/S 10-08-04 Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Georgia
Wayne Nelson 1969 L88 Corvette 11.74 @ 119 F/S 05-07-04 US 41 Dragway in Morocco, Indiana

In the fastest time for a Z06, published test that I've seen, and I've read everyone I could get my hands on, Car and Driver magazine recorded 11.7 seconds @ 125 mph in their test of a C6Z06.
In the January 1993 issue of "Corvette Fever", there was a drag race between a 1969 L88 and a 1966 427 SC Cobra. Both cars ran headers and M&H street legal tires. The Corvette's best run was 11.88 while the Cobra could only manage a 12.52.

My Personal preference would be the old 427 mainly because I had one once upon a time but, considering the advancements that have been made in computer control and fuel injection the new corvette would more than likely win that race. Plus as mentioned in the other answer above the new Corvette is lighter which makes a big difference as long as the rear tires hook-up and it doesn't spend half the track burning rubber. It all tends to fall back to how much horsepower and torque is delivered to the rear wheels and the new Corvette is the winner in that equation.

I do know this. The Camaro SS with 427 would come out of the factory at 10.29 in a 1/4 mi. Don't remember the vette cause I built the Camaro in Norwood starting in "75" and I saw these cars go down my street being tested and the guys I worked with drove em'.

For the guy that wrote the big long article..that is great...but you are missing a couple points...exact or not..they are clones...not the original..there is a difference, between the two...first of all wieght of the car...is huge...what were they running for fuel? Chevy has already stated that the new ZO6 is the all around fastest vette produced.
When you start talkign about clones...everything from the oil you run..to gaskets you use..all help..not to mention...did they ever tear one of them down? Doubtful.
I have been in a L88 corvette and I have been in a new C6 and I would be willing to bet the new C^ (not even Zo6) is faster.

NO contest. The newer ones are lighter, and remember, H/P is measured differently today than it was back then, meaning today's 400 H/P, in 1969 would be more like 450 or more.
Currently, (I think) the H/P is measured with all lights and other equipment, like A/C and radio, turned on, which puts a load on the engine.

No, if somebody's a jerk than they seem to be a jerk. i'm in user-friendly terms advantageous to somebody in the event that they are advantageous, in spite of age. If something, their old age ought to have taught them to be variety and reverential. and that i swear, like ninety% of elderly human beings I meet are the two racist, homophobic, boastful, or all 3.

the old motor is one of the best motors chevy ever made because it had the power of the 454 but reved higher. And the heads have smaller chambers making it pump way more horse power.
