it could be a driver problem, software problem, hardware problem, viral problem or the system could be overheating.
Impossible to diagnose from here.
Have loaded any new software, hardware onto your system in which case try removing them again to see if this solves the problem. If this is the problem contact the vendor.
Run spyware checks and viral scans.
mbm (motherboard monitor) will allow you to monitor system temperatures to see if this is the cause. To protect the processor the system will shutdown if it is starting to get to too hot. This can happen if you have the air vents blocked either with dust or some obstruction in the road. The power supply could be dying.

This may sound dumb, but are you sure you are shutting it down all the way? Not just sign off (that's in case there are several users on one system), but also shut off computer, and confirm.
