These 2 programs were highly recommended, so my husband and myself downloaded them onto our computers. Now we are noticing the internet (page loading) running much slower than normal. Is this just the tradeoff for using these programs or is there a way to set it up that we've overlooked?

It depends on many things. How fast is your connection to the Inet? What is your system configuration? RAM? Drive Speed? Bus Speed? CPU Speed? Etc.
If you run these type of programs non-stop you have to know they are always checking, always lurking, always listening for attackes, updates and more. They do this in order to attempt to keep you protected. But there is a trade-off just like with virus protection software. It can be seen sometimes as performance decline. You could also try other browsers such as Firefox or Opera. I use Firefox extensively, http://www.mozilla.com , but not always.
There are lots of choices for both adware, malware, and virus protection software. Some free, some commerical. You can always do a Google on this kind of stuff and get the opinions and experience of others.

Spywareblaster is a good reliable program that runs in the background and uses very little of your cpu: it prevents spyware from being installed on your system.
The free version of Ad-aware does not monitor your system while you are on the Internet and is just used for scanning your system as and when you require it.
Try a trial version of CounterSpy from http://www.sunbelt-software.com to constantly monitor your system while you're on the Net, or Ewido from http://www.ewido.net/en/

Spyware blaster is slowing your page load down because its watching for known spyware threats. If the speed loss is negligible, let it run. Contrary to what others are telling you, as a rule, good spyware tools and antivirus tools will slow you down because they are checking every move you make! Some people think faster is better but consider this! If its fast it aint lookin at everything!

I highly recommed them also. I used both of these, and my computer is slower only when I run them. So I usually let them run, get rid of the junk they find, and then use my computer when they are finished. They don't take long once your computer is cleaned up.

I would suggest you remove them. Download instead Windows Defender. Those two programs slowed my computer down a lot too and I have had good luck with the Windows Defender.
