It's probably best to tell your bf the truth. It wouldn't be fair to go with him and not really like him anymore. But I wouldn't go to the dance with the other guy. That is just rude. How would you feel if someone did that to you? I think, that you should go to the dance with a group and if you see that other guy, hang out and dance, but don't go with him as a date. Then later on talk about starting a relationship. But wait a lit bit just for the sake of your ex and so it won't seem you just "change bf's like you do under garments." That looks really bad when a person does that.

You made a promise to go to the dance with him.
A promise is a promise.
Be nice, be human...treat him as you would like to be respected.
Meet him after the dance,after you have thought it over a bit more thoroughly and tell him your feelings have changed, if indeed that's how you really feel ... and tell him what you have enjoyed or gotten from the relationship, wish him well and a "good bye" and be on your way.

Be honest with your boyfriend and as gently as possible let him know you don't want to go out with him anymore and that you found someone else. It is better to do that than to waste his time or cheat and hurt him.
