I have a house full of stuff, and am a bit of pack-rat. I need to winnow down my stuff and get ready for a rented bedroom. Which I will be sharing with my son.(50%). I'm having a hard time because I keep thinking...wait, I can use this....etc. Any tips, thought processes to help me make my move date? Yard sale is not an option btw.

I know I can get rid of stuff...expediting the sorting is my problem...it's taking too long. What methodology do you use...how do you sort it all. I do plan to get a small amount of storage. How have you dealt with this problem.

It sounds like your problem is that you are reluctant to give away or toss a lot of things that you're not using right now... but you might be sorry if you get rid of them. That is a very common problem!

When sorting in keep/toss/give away boxes, add another category. These are the things you know you really ought to give up but don't want to part with. Put these in boxes, and on the boxes list every item inside. (This way you won't have to open the boxes later to see what they contain.) Seal them up.

Put those boxes into storage. IF you need something, you will know where to find it. Later on, when you weed out your storage area, you will realize you have been doing fine without most of it and you can winnow some more.

When you remove things from your space, you get something in return: space, organization, and neatness. Chances are that there WILL be things in those boxes you'd be able to use, but you can't predict what they are right now. Give this method a try. If it doesn't work out, you can bring all that stuff back... but I don't think you will want to!

craigslist.org

Try this website. You can list things for sale, no fee to list. Like a big newspaper classified ad. I have used it to sell lots of stuff (and buy).

Sort by trash, charity, & keep. Pack it or bag it for trash immediately - don't waste time thinking about it. It is time and emotionally draining, but necessary.
