The numbers on a clock show a fractional part of an hour (1/12th of an hour elapses between numbers on large hand). Cooking requires fractions, say I have a recipe that serves 12 and calls for 1/4th cup of oil. If I wanted to serve 24 instead I could use 2*(1/4) = 1/2 cup of oil. Fractions help with money also. Suppose I wanted to earn $24 and I know I made $8/hour. The fraction 24/8 = 3 tells me I have to work 3 hours.

Working in the oil-industry, everything that I do and have to work around deals with fractions(measurements) to calculate the work being done. Many factors are involved in this process; #1: being safety!
I have to calculate "working-pressure's" of many different gases, then liquids, and even solids, and constantly convert them at different stages(bulk) all of this is done using fractions, so you know what material will be needed to do the job, or what yields you can expect or loose. what the costs of a job can be and what "revenue"(profits) can be generated from the first few minutes over the life of a well.
We live in a very detailed world these days, and take it for granted that we are constantly using fractions in our every day life, and not realizing how much we use fractions to get through the day.
How many times a day do you look at a clock or watch, to help you decide on what needs to be done, or how long it will take you to complete the task at hand, or to cook a meal, buy gas for your vehicle? Fractions and math help you in your daily life, in one form or another, and you don't realize it most of the time. Math is pretty simple when you don't ponder over it and fear it. With out it we wouldn't be on a computer right now, or have the many "luxeries"(cell-phones, microwave, homes, cars, T.V. etc..) that we enjoy so much, today.
Fractions are all around us...
Good luck on your essay, it should be real simple to write, and take you a "fraction" of time as well!!

Did you discuss religion with these people prior to being on this site, or was there some mutual agreement to not bring it up? I still pretty much relate to people the same way as I always have. Although I've only been in R & S a few weeks, I spent two years in politics and still do not try to argue with friends who are not in my party.
