My son suggests going to runescape. He has all of his friends hooked and his friends parents!! He is on that game for literally hours on end. He says the training is boring but when you finish, it's a blast. He says be patient and get through the training and it'll be well worth the wait!!
He also suggests maplestory. It's a download. go to mapleglobal.com and download it from there. if he isn't on runescape, he is on maplestory! have fun and good luck!

There are lots of free MMORPGs online, but finding them can be a bit of a challange.
The first I would suggest is MapleStory, only because it seems to be one of the most popular online games right now. It's a side-scrolling RPG done with an anime-style; it's actually really cute. It's completely free, and all you have to do is download their client and register to play. There's even an online shop where you can use real money to purchase makeovers and different items for your character.
Two others I'd recommend are Knight Online and Silkroad Online. I didn't play much of either one, but they're pretty good for being free online games. You'll also have to register and download a client for these. Silkroad may not be as "fantasy" as you'd like, as it takes place in early China and Europe (the whole Silkroad/trade route thing).
You can also try playing Ragnarok Online on a free server. The official servers will cost you money, but free ones are popping up all over the place. Some have their own client, but others don't, so you'll have to research that a little. I've included a link to Clownphobia's Lightside/Legend RO, but you can always do a Google search to find other servers if you don't like this one (Lightside/Legend has their own client that you can download right from their website and forums).
A lot of people may suggest Runescape, but I really wouldn't recommend it. I'll only link there because there's a lot of people that play, but honestly...I've seen better looking games out for DOS. It's free, and it plays right in your browser window, so you don't have to download anything.
If all else fails, you can try looking through FreeMMORPGList.com. They have a lot of game listings, all separated by genre. Not all games work anymore, though, and I know of one in particular that is shutting their servers down at the end of the month. Just something to watch out for, but a good site, regardless.
I hope this helped some, and good luck!
