too small for a badger or fox, too big for a mole (and you usually only see the pile of earth, not the hole), possibly rabbit (if it's a big grapefruit) or rats (if it's a small grapefruit). watch it at dusk. if there's any bird food in the area or compost, it's probably rats. don't be scared - we don't have anything that terrifying in this country - it's more likely to be scared of you!

Sounds like it could be a mole. They make a hole with a little mound of earth at the top. Ususally the hole of 3 inches or so across & the little mound is about 2 or 3 inches high & spreads to a circle if about 5 inches across.
