If you are applying for jobs and interviewing for different jobs...they always ask: "Can we contact your current" employer? Is it safe to let them do this? Are they contacting them for employment verification or other stuff?

actually my current employer....since there is such a big turn over rate currently uses a third party company called the Work Number to provide employment verification services. So if a company I am interviewing with were to call my current employer they would be directed to call The Work Number because there is no actual way to talk to my "boss" or to anyone in my department. And my local HR would no speak to them about me.

I work for a professional company but my job I do for them is not professional. However I consider myself as being a professional because I have a BS in Computer Information Systems and I am always looking to get into the IT field, which currently I am not in right now.

I would let them, if you say no then they would maybe suspect you had something to hide. Good Luck

I always let them contact my employer, mainly because I have been truthful in my application and also I strive to do my best in life. I have nothing to hide from the company I am applying for.
I would recommend letting the company contact your previous employer in the sense that it gives the new company verification that what you say is true, it also gives the new company an idea of how well of a worker you are. I the reason I wouldn't let a company verify my current employment is if I had something to hide. So hopefully this helps. Good luck with the job hunt!

Perhaps it depends on your field, but personally I would not want them contacting my current employer until after they gave me a job offer, I work in a professional field and would not want my employer to know I am looking. For example depending how many leads I have and how hard I work at it, it could take me several months to find a position - meanwhile the current employer if they knew I was looking could decide to replace me and do it quicker, or it could just create resentment. I wouldn't risk it.

That's a no win situation. If you are under bad terms and want out of your job because things are going wrong, I'd tell them that you don't wish your current employer to be contacted. If you are just looking to make a career move, then yes, let them talk to your employer. It's part of life that people leave their jobs and employers understand that.

The reason they ask if they can contact your CURRENT employer is because they understand that your current employer may not be aware that you are looking for another job, and they don't want to create problems. Unless you are worried about getting fired for looking for another job, or unless you are worried that your employer would give you a very negative recommendation, it is always better to say yes. It shows your future employer that you are honest, up front, and have nothing to hide.

By law, the only thing an employer can verify is the wether or not you are a current employer, date of hire, and position held.

Well, By law your former employer is only legally allowed to give out start and end dates, and your job. In your case, still being employed, they can basically only give start date. If you find that any other information was divulged, they can get in trouble.
