Women are different and that means that no two peoples bodies do the exact same thing. What you want to do is if you haven't already set an appointment with the gynecologist. This will be the first step a leading a health life as a woman. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor question either.

I had this problem as a teen and have it again now that I'm done with having kids-- you should see your doc and maybe get birth control pills. These will make the bleeding much, much lighter! It was the only thing that worked for me (and cleared up my skin). Also, see your doc to rule out any other possible problems that could be from having really heavy periods (anemia, endometriosis). I happened to not have any problems, just a miserable long heavy period. Good luck.

do you bleed heavy all throughout your period? i used to bleed heavy so i went to the doctors, he put me on the pill to control my periods as they were very irregular and heavy.
I'm OK now, i bleed a little heavy on the day of my period, but that only lasts about a hour, then its normal.
As no two woman is the same id just have a word with your doctor if you are worried or uncomfortable, they can advise you better on what to do.
good luck

It might just be the way you are, but as others have suggested, you should see your GP to make sure it isn't a symptom of anything else.
A book you might find interesting is Marilyn Glenville's 'Nutritional Health Handbook for Women', which has a section on heavy periods, with suggestions for ways you can 'treat' this with your diet, vitamins, herbs etc. This might be a better long-term approach than what a doctor could suggest, e.g. taking the pill or other medication.

You should see your Dr if it is really heavy as you can become anaemic with a lot of blood loss. If you have just newly started your periods it can be like this for a while until your body adjusts to it. Don't worry about it being messy, just make sure you change whatever sanitary protection you use frequently and change your underwear if need be. It should settle down eventually but if you are concerned then make an appointment with your Dr.

See how long it takes to fill an overnight pad. If it fills before the 8 hour mark, try a super plus tampon. If you have to stay home constantly changing pads, go to a doc. My is always light in the beginging, heavy in the middle, then ends slowly, quits for a day then it comes back heavy for one more day.

Wear a tampon and a sanitary towel. If you don't like using tampons, make sure your sanitary towels are for high absorbancy (super or super plus) and always carry spares around with you. Also, have a clean pair of knickers in your bag just in case of spills.
Don't worry too much, my periods were really heavy during my teens but settled down later on.

If you mean you have really heavy periods, then you could go on the Pill, which may alleviate this, but as I am not sure how old you are, If you are young, speak to your mom about it and see if she thinks its a good idea.
All the best.
