Most on-line apps, are designed to work with Windows. Windows has quite a few security flaws. Linux, almost just by being linux (and not as popular) is not as susceptible to viruses, simply because most online stuff does not know what to do with it. If you want to be secure- go linux, but be prepared for some clunkiness... Have you tried Firefox? Kind of a intermediate step.

If you have a good firewall or anti-virus program windows is pretty secure. Othewise Linux would be a better choice, but the usability of Linux is nowhere near as friendly as Windows.

Linux is safer against viruses/
But if you run a good virus program, and keep it updated, windows is great too.
Free avg at grisoft.com is a good virus program, and it is free, and it is compatible with windows XP security center

Everyone says 'Linux' is more secure. I have tried both, and I feel more comfortable with 'Windows'. But I could be biased, as I have been using Windows for years.
