British Government did not divide any thing they just did not interfere with what they did not understand. In fact they united the country by making provinces and presidencies of several different parts so that all people could mingle will all.
To give you one example the old Madras presidency included Tamil nadu, parts of andhra, Parts of Orissa, and even kerala and mysore. Students from all these parts came to madras For higher studies and mingle with each other and carried happy memories of association.
To day Linguistically divided Indian Universities have only a quota for students from other states(foreigners).
Linguistic states was the Creation of Pandit Jawahar lall Nehru.
Remember there was no water dispute in British India
The divisions always existed and people co-existed happily. It is the post in dependant congress which started capitalising on the divide for winning elections.Others followed suit and the result is what you see today.

No our country is not a divided cast of people. Integration of people have never been occuring more. A divided country would be the period of segregation or the Civil War. The new generation of kids are not as racist as the old one. The political boundaries do not have a huge effect on division of the people. Do not get me wrong, there are still some who favor a division of the population by race, but my opinion, those numbers are falling.

But by nurturing their families the politicians cheat the people in the name of social service. This is the hindrance we have rather than other divides
