"For" is a preposition and is usually followed by the object of the preposition -- which would be a noun or the noun form of a verb. A gerund is a verb form ending in "ing" and is used as a noun. That's why "for" is followed by a verb (actually, a verbal noun) that ends in "ing."
I love him for wanting me.
This headset is good for listening to music.
